I belong to the San Fernando Valley Historical Society and have been involved heavily in preserving and improving what is left of the old historic Pioneer Cemetery located in Sylmar at the corner of Foothill and Bledsoe (about a half-mile west of Polk St.).

The cemetery was established in 1874 by Senator Charles Maclay, and it is the second oldest cemetery in the San Fernando Valley. Records show there are more than 600 buried on the grounds, and almost half of them were children under the age of one. The last burial was in 1939. We have discovered that 5 Civil War veterans are buried there, as well as prominent citizens in the San Fernando area.

The cemetery is open for tours on the third Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. till Noon.  It is staffed entirely by volunteers. Come by and say hi to me. I donate a portion of my commission on every transaction to help the cemetery. So dealing with me for all of your Sylmar real estate needs also helps keep the old cemetery “alive.”

Awesome! I want to go and get some pix. What about the cemetery between the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, where the Dam disaster survivors were buried?

Excellent. Come out next Saturday for photos (May 16) or visit during Memorial Day Observance (May 25).

I am a member of Daughter’s of Union Veterans of the Civil War (Tent 91). I joined other “sisters’ and took my 5 y/o grandson to walk and view the cemetery last Saturday, Oct. 3. We have plans to participate in the restoration.
